The City of Ottawa has three types of sewers; wastewater, storm water, and combined. A combined sewer carries both wastewater and stormwater. This may not seem like a problem, but it is. The combined sewers will divert to overflow into the Ottawa river to prevent flooding or sewer backups. This can cause bacterial buildup in the river, and hazardous conditions in the area surrounding the watershed of the Ottawa River. The City of Ottawa recognizes this, and efforts are being made to halt the overflow of dangerous sewage into the Ottawa River. (City of Ottawa)

Another problem facing this river is that there is a lack of hemlock in older forests that are located along or near the Ottawa River. Secondly, many of the aforementioned older forests along the Ottawa river are small and difficult to find. This is due to the booming logging industry that flourished until paper mills became more commonplace. (Learn more about the forests along this river here). This deficit of older forests can be problematic to the ecosystems along the Ottawa River. (Wikipedia)

Our tour recognizes these and more risks that face the aging Ottawa River. Our tour is ecological in many ways.
Firstly, 20 dollars from what each cruiser pays will be donated the City of Ottawa to help fund sewer separation plans. Sewer separation will to prevent overflows. (City of Ottawa). Secondly, all paper and paper products onboard our ship are made from recycled paper. Thirdly, recycling bins are provided onboard. Finally, our boat is small so that it does not pollute the river as much as a larger, more expensive cruise ship might.
We are currently working to install some solar power onto our cruise ship. However, this takes time and money! Another 10 dollars that you pay will go towards adding solar panels to some parts of the ship.
